What is Engagement Rate?
Engagement rate is the percentage of an audience that actively interacts with a piece of content. It is the single most important metric for evaluating a creator's audience quality. A high engagement rate indicates an audience that watches, responds, and trusts the creator's recommendations.
Why Engagement Rate Matters in Creator Marketing
Follower count tells you how many people followed a creator. Engagement rate tells you how many of those followers actually care. A creator with 20K followers and a 5% engagement rate has a more valuable audience than one with 200K followers and a 0.3% rate. 72% of brands now prioritize engagement rate over follower count when selecting creators, and academic research confirms that engagement is the primary mechanism through which smaller creators outperform larger ones on ROI.
How to Calculate Engagement Rate
There are two common formulas. By followers: (Total Engagements / Total Followers) x 100. By views: (Total Engagements / Total Views) x 100. Engagement by views is generally more accurate because it accounts for algorithmic reach. A creator's engagement rate should be calculated as a median over 30 to 90 days, not from a single viral post, to get an honest picture of typical performance.
Benchmarks by Creator Tier
Nano-influencers (1K to 10K): 2.71% average, 6.23% on Instagram. Micro-influencers (10K to 100K): 1.81% average. Macro-influencers (100K to 1M): typically below 1%. Mega-influencers (1M+): often under 0.5%. Mozie tracks engagement rate over 7, 14, 30, 90, 180, and 365 day windows, showing the trend rather than just a snapshot. A declining engagement rate is a red flag, even if the current number looks good.
