What is CPE (Cost Per Engagement)?
CPE, or Cost Per Engagement, measures the cost a brand pays for each meaningful interaction on a creator's sponsored content. Engagements include likes, comments, shares, saves, and other active responses from the audience. CPE is calculated by dividing the total brand spend by the total number of engagements.
Why CPE Matters in Creator Marketing
While CPV measures passive reach (someone saw the content), CPE measures active response (someone interacted with it). A high engagement rate signals that the audience is not just watching but responding, which correlates strongly with purchase intent and brand recall. 72% of brands now prioritize engagement metrics over follower count when selecting creators. CPE helps brands compare creators of different sizes on a level playing field.
How to Calculate CPE
Formula: CPE = Total Brand Spend / Total Engagements. If a brand pays $600 for a sponsored Instagram Reel that receives 1,500 engagements (likes + comments + shares + saves), the CPE is $0.40. Lower CPE means each interaction costs less, which generally indicates a more engaged and responsive audience.
Industry Benchmarks
Instagram Reels: $0.30 to $0.80 CPE for micro-creators. YouTube: $0.50 to $2.00 CPE for long-form content. Nano-influencers have disproportionately lower CPE due to their higher engagement rates, sometimes achieving CPE under $0.10. Micro-influencers can deliver up to 16x lower CPE than macro-influencers for certain campaign types. Creators who know their CPE can price more competitively and demonstrate clear value to brand partners.
